Chengdu Urban Rivers Association (CURA)
Chengdu Urban Rivers Association (CURA) is an independent non-profit NGO based in Chengdu, and has received many awards and recognition for its work. Originally it was mandated to improving the water quality of Chengdu’s Fu-Nan River. However in the eight years of its work, CURA has broadened its focus to include related environmental protection concerns and sustainable development.
In CURA’s efforts to stem the destruction of Chengdu’s freshwater resources, they followed the source of pollution upstream – both figuratively and literally – and found that in order to clean up the river in Chengdu, they had to first establish clean agricultural practices in the countryside. They have since established a model agricultural project in Anlong Village, northwest of Chengdu, which has recently caught the attention of the Western media, the Chinese central government, and the US state department among others. A diverse staff of former government workers, scientists, community members and engineers allows CURA to work towards protecting the environment through policy reform, biodynamic landscaping, awareness education, and innovative implementation projects that improve both the quality of life of farmers and the quality of the environment. CURA is now one of the foremost organizations in China’s rapidly-growing environmental movement.
