2015/16 was a huge year for the British Chamber of Commerce in China Southwest & CBBC and this year’s Annual General Meeting and Queen’s Birthday Party was the perfect opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the past year and look forward to even stronger times ahead in 2016/17.
The Annual General Meeting (AGM):
Our Annual General Meeting this year, as well as our Queen’s Birthday Party and VIP Reception (attended by the All Party Parliamentary China Group from the UK as well as other VIPs), took place in the Niccolo Hotel in Chengdu. The AGM featured a look back at the year that was, and featured a UK-China update from Director of the British Business Centre Beijing, Peter Williams. Like each year, the AGM also featured a tightly fought battle for places on our Executive Committee for the upcoming year. This year the places contested were for Chairman and for our Chengdu At-large Representatives. See the below image for our new Executive Committee for 2016/17, featuring Richard Han (RPS) as Chair, Richard Morgan (Equus) as Vice-Chair Chengdu, Roman Leung (Brighton Auto Lifestyle) as Vice-Chair Chongqing, Dr. Gary Daniels (Underground) as Treasurer, Chengdu Representatives David Bryce (Oxford International College of Chengdu), Malcolm Phillips (Malvern College Chengdu), Paul Yeandle (InternChina), Zhang Yi (Zhonglun Law Firm) and Ivy Yu (IHG/Crowne Plaza Chengdu West), and last but not least Tao Zhai (FBLD Consulting) as Chongqing Representative. Mention must also go to Mark Bancroft, whom after two years dutifully serving as Chairman now moves into a role of Honorary Chair.
The Queen’s 90th Birthday Party (QBP):
Following the AGM and VIP Reception, a rocking collection of British classics welcomed all to the party downstairs in The Bar in the Niccolo Chengdu. A plentiful and varied buffet awaited guests, as well as red and white wine and Scottish beers, guaranteeing all of our 200+ valued attendees did not go wanting! Those arriving from the 3rd floor also had the opportunity to spot three beautiful cars: two Aston Martins and, amazingly, the Queen’s 1963 Phantom V Rolls-Royce! Speeches were delivered by our gold sponsors from BRC Group and Urboso, Lord Clement-Jones and new Chair Richard Han as he welcomed the rest of the Executive Committee for the first time. The British Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai were also on hand to formally announce the launch of the British Business Awards 2016 in West China (which we encourage all eligible members to register for!). Finally, we took a moment to thank Tina Redshaw, British Consul General in Chongqing, for all of her support and hard work in Southwest China, as she prepares to return to the UK having finished her posting here. The band played a great set, and one particularly enthusiastic attendee got up on stage to sing Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’! Lucky prize draw winners took home various hotel vouchers, before the grand prize of a return flight to London was gleefully accepted.
We would like to thank all of our guests, VIP guests, sponsors and the hotel staff for helping make this event one of our most memorable in Southwest China! Stay tuned for our next big event, the British Day Out (name TBC) taking place in a few months!
