Be Yourself: Pledge for Progress

The British Embassy and Consulates-General in China and the All China Women’s Federation invite you to join the other credible businesses, from both China and the UK, in the Be Yourself: Pledge for Progress campaign.

The British government in China is working with the All China Women’s Federation to promote women’s empowerment across the business world through the Be Yourself: Pledge for Progress campaign. This work forms part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed last year between the UK’s Government Equalities Office and the All China Women’s Federation, inviting businesses to publically pledge on social media to foster women’s empowerment within their own organisations.

WHY?

Gender disparity prevails.  49.6% of the global population is female, but in 2017, globally they fill only 22% of senior managerial roles.

Women’s empowerment is an economic necessity. An increase in female labour force participation—or a reduction in the gap between women’s and men’s labour force participation—results in faster economic growth. Advancing women’s equality could add minimum $12 trillion to global GDP by 2025 (McKinsey 2015).

The challenge is serious. It will take 217 years to close the gender gap at current rates of progress. This, along with other global social barriers, inhibits women’s advancement in the workplace.

WHAT?

We will raise awareness of the need for women’s equality in business to unlock economic gains for all.

We will work together with both British and Chinese business representatives operating in China to pledge their support to undertake practical and effective women’s empowerment initiatives within their organisations.

We will bring together both women AND men to discuss the issues and share solutions.

We will create a platform to share best practice between British and Chinese enterprises. All contributing towards closer working partnerships and positively influencing working practicE

HOW TO PLEDGE?

We invite businesses to make ambitious and achievable pledges on Sina Weibo, unique to their organisation, to foster women’s empowerment, by 31 December 2018. Pledges must use the hashtag #妳的未来不是梦#

We will track your pledges by the hashtag. The good pledges will be selected to form part of the official communications plan and get promoted by the official social media accounts of the British Embassy and Consulates-General in China. Selected businesses may also be able to join our off-line events and receive ample exposure opportunity from our influential media partners.
