The Psychosomatic Medicine Center of Sichuan Taikang Hospital

The Psychosomatic Medicine Center of Sichuan Taikang Hospital is highly regarded in promoting the integration of mental and physical aspects at the forefront of medicine. As a strategic cornerstone within the hospital, the center is distinguished both within the Southwest China and across the nation for its distinctive development and influence. Professor Sun Xueli, the founder and director of the center, has dedicated decades to this field, advancing a “Holistic Medicine” principle that emphasizes comprehensive treatment for both body and mind. This approach focuses on the interaction between physical and mental health to enhance patients’ quality of life from a holistic medical perspective.

Psychosomatic medicine is not merely an independent discipline; it is a guiding principle woven into medical practice. The onset and progression of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are shaped not only by biological and genetic factors but also by a complex interplay of psychosocial factors, including a patient’s living environment, social and cultural background, interpersonal relationships, and lifestyles etc. In a more specific context, psychosomatic medicine and mental illnesses, emphasizing individualized treatment plans that address each patient’s unique psychological and social circumstances.

The growing demand for psychosomatic medicine highlights the far-reaching value of this emerging paradigm in healthcare. Initiated under the pioneering vision of Professor Sun, the Psychosomatic Medicine Center at Sichuan Taikang Hospital provides specialized medical support in areas such as emotion management and sleep disorders, with particular success in the integrated treatment of emotional disorders—including anxiety and depression—and chronic physical conditions, for instance, hypertension, diabetes and chronic pain etc. Additionally, the center has established dedicated services for adolescent mental health, conducting thorough investigations and precise differentiation for complex psychosomatic conditions, and building a robust base of clinical data and practical expertise.

When mentioning the support from Sichuan Taikang Hospital, Professor Sun said, “The platform Taikang provided has offered me with the opportunity to realize my ideal vision of psychosomatic medicine.” This open and supportive atmosphere has facilitated innovation in psychosomatic medicine and interdisciplinary integration, advancing the delivery of comprehensive mind-body healthcare services and providing more personalized and systematic medical care for a greater number of individuals.

Core Services

1. Sleep Disorders and Related Issues
Sleep-related issues and disorders are among the more typical challenges addresses in psychosomatic medicine. The Psychosomatic Medicine Center prioritizes sleep disorders in both clinical and research activities, with a particular focus on the two most prevalent types: Psychophysiological insomnia and insomnia associated with physical conditions or bodily issues. Together, these types of insomnia account for approximately 40% of all cases, making them a core focus of the center’s initiatives.

2. Treatment and Research of Mental Disorders
The treatment and research of mental disorders are closely linked to both psychological and biological factors. For example, depressive disorders are associated with cognition, emotions, neuroendocrine function, and the CNS electrophysiology; anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders are related to cognitive and emotional functions as well as neuroendocrine factors; and bipolar disorder is affected by biological rhythms and imbalanced neuroendocrine level. Addressing mental disorders from a psychosomatic perspective represents a progressive approach in both domestic and international healthcare.

3. Psychosomatic Treatment and Research of Physical Illnesses
The development of physical illnesses and symptoms is influenced by genetic factors, personality traits, and emotional factors. Conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, metabolic syndrome, and chronic pain illustrate this association. Integrated psychosomatic therapy of physical illnesses and symptoms is a focal area for the center and remains at the forefront of both national and international practices. In the past five years, the team has conducted and continues to pursue psychosomatic therapy and experimental research in this field. This work has earned national awards, patents, and numerous international publications, providing strong support for center’s ongoing initiatives.

4. Treatment and Research on Psychosomatic Issues in Children and Adolescents
Psychological issues among children and adolescents are currently a prominent concern within China. However, a comprehensive approach to psychosomatic issues in children and adolescents should be prioritized. Many challenges they face are inherently psychosomatic, such as metabolic syndrome and obesity, as well as mood instability tied to genetics, personality, cognition, psychological development, family relationships and etc. Additionally, issues arising from stress, as thyroid dysfunction and even tumor risks, are drawing heightened focus.
Presently, the focus on child and adolescents’ health in China leans heavily toward psychological aspects, with relatively less attention on biological factors. At the Psychosomatic Medicine Center at Sichuan Taikang Hospital, the objective is to develop a distinctive model for psychosomatic treatment tailored specifically for children and adolescents. Given the broad scope and priority of psychosomatic issues in children and adolescents, this field holds considerable potential for further expansion.

5. Psychological Counseling and Psychotherapy

(1) Counseling for the psychological issues of sub-healthy populations, including marital relationships, intimate relationships, and parent-child relationships, aims to enhance quality of life and prevent the occurrence of physical and mental conditions.

(2) Correction of behavioral issues in children and adolescents and guidance on guardian roles.

(3) Given that the onset of physical illnesses is associated with personality traits and psychological stress, psychological counseling and therapy can serve as supplementary or primary treatments for various physical conditions

(4) Growth and development education for children and adolescents

(5) Psychological health counseling for the elderly

(1)亚健康人群的心理问题辅导,如婚姻关系、亲密关系、亲子关系等,从而提升生活治疗,预防躯体及精神疾病的发生;

(2)未成年人的行为问题矫正及家长角色的替代;

(3)由于躯体疾病的发生与个性有关,也与心理应激有关,因此心理咨询及治疗可以作为各种躯体疾病的辅助治疗或主要治疗之一;

(4)未成年人的成长教育;
