UK Business Visit (27th October 2016) Highlights
- – Laos is one of the world’s fastest growing economies averaging 7-8% GDP growth per annum over the last decade and household income has more than trebled from $500-$1700 since 2011;
- – Laos is a ASEAN member state that has used its current chairmanship of the regional body to champion the integration of the newly launched AEEAN Economic Community;
- – The government’s strategy is to position the country to be a future a business, transport and energy hub for the wider region;
- – Though small compared with its neighbours, Laos is also a new market offering early mover advantage in a host of sectors – visit will feature interaction with companies already making a mark here;
- – The Chinese are the biggest investors in Laos accounting for over a third of FDI, currently concentrated in mining, energy, agriculture and real estate but with ambitions to develop other sectors, too;
- – During visit of UK ASEAN Ambassadors to Kunming in March 2016, Chinese firms expressed interest in exploring potential cooperation in Laos and other ASEAN markets;
- – Timed to coincide with visit of Lord David Puttnam, the famous film director who is the British Prime Ministers’ Trade Envoy to the Indochina region, the visit programme is a pioneering opportunity to showcase post-Brexit British commercial expertise and appetite in a rapidly expanding market and actively to explore potential collaboration with Chinese companies already established locally;
- – A successful visit should pave the way for further UK/China commercial collaboration in ASEAN markets.
